The Chair of the Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca

President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca served in politics for 45 years and was a Member of Parliament for 16 years. She was the very first elected female General Secretary of one of the two main political parties in Malta. Coleiro Preca also served at the Council of Europe. As Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity, she initiated numerous social reforms. The Maltese Parliament unanimously elected Ms Coleiro Preca as President of Malta in 2014.

Coleiro Preca founded and chairs The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, The Malta Trust Foundation and The Emanuele Cancer Research Foundation Malta. President Emeritus Coleiro Preca is President of Eurochild, UNIDO Goodwill Ambassador for Equality, Member of the Council of World Women Leaders, and Member of the WPL Global Forum Advisory Board.

Marie Louise Coleiro Preca graduated with a Bachelor in Legal and Humanistic Studies, and a Notary Public from the University of Malta.
Ms Coleiro Preca is also Honorary Professor of the University of Warwick, Honorary Doctor of Laws from University of Leicester (UK), and Honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of Malta.

Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca is deeply passionate and vociferous about improving the lives of the most vulnerable in society, continuing to be so throughout Her Presidency, and beyond. She is a strong advocate and avid speaker on a number of social issues including social justice, equality and equity, children’s rights and gender equality.

The Council of Governors of The Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society

The Foundation is governed by the Council of Governors. The role of the Council is to share with the Chair the knowledge and the experience of its members, and to draw the attention to any social issues that are of national priority and concern to the Wellbeing of Society.

The Council has a consultative function alongside the Board of Administrators of the Foundation which has an executive role. The Council is composed of the Chair of the Foundation, the Director, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, representatives from the Government and the Opposition, a representative from the Ministry of Finance, a representative of the Principle Permanent Secretary, a representative from the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, and the Local Councils Association, and a representative of the University of Malta. The Secretary to the Board of Administrators also acts as the Secretary of the Council of Governors.

The Board of Administrators

The Board of Administrators, has an executive role in the running of the Foundation. It is composed of the Chair, the Director, and eleven members. The Secretary and the Treasurer of the Foundation are ex-officio members of the Board. The Board meets at least once every month and has the responsibility to ensure that the Foundation pursues its objectives and carries out its activities to further its aims and ethos, and thus fulfil its mandate.
